โœจ Pixel Art Tips & Tricks - October 20, 2025

My journey learning pixel art from scratch! Started with simple 16x16 sprites and now I'm creating full character animations. Here's everything I wish I knew when I started:

  • Color palettes - Start with 4-8 colors max
  • Anti-aliasing techniques for smooth curves
  • Animation principles in low-res art
  • Dithering and texture tricks

๐ŸŽฏ Tools I Use Daily:

  • Aseprite - Best pixel art software hands down
  • Lospec - Amazing palette library
  • Piskel - Great free browser-based option
  • GraphicsGale - Old school but powerful

๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ UI/UX Design Philosophy:

Good game UI should be invisible. Players shouldn't think about your interface - they should just use it naturally. I learned this the hard way after testing Ocean Quest with friends!

Check out my blog for UI mockups, design iterations, and before/after comparisons of my game interfaces! ๐ŸŽฎ

๐ŸŽต Sound Design on a Budget

Creating Immersive Audio Without Breaking the Bank

Sound design can make or break your game, but you don't need expensive equipment! Here's my complete workflow:

๐ŸŽน Free Tools I Swear By:

  • Audacity - Industry standard, completely free
  • LMMS - Digital Audio Workstation for music
  • Bfxr/Sfxr - Retro sound effect generators
  • Chiptone - Chip tune music creator
  • Reaper - Affordable DAW with unlimited trial

๐ŸŽค Recording Techniques:

  • Use your phone! Modern phones have decent mics
  • Foley sounds - everyday objects make great SFX
  • Voice acting with friends (bribing with pizza works)
  • Freesound.org - Massive library of free sounds

Pro Tips:

๐Ÿ”Š Layers are everything - combine 2-3 sounds for richer audio

๐ŸŽผ Music should match your game's emotion, not overpower it

๐Ÿ”‰ Sound effects should have varying pitches to avoid repetition

๐ŸŽง Always test with both speakers AND headphones

For Ocean Quest, I recorded underwater sounds in my bathtub. Creative solutions > expensive gear! ๐Ÿ›

  • Version control - Use Git from day one, future you will thank you
  • Scope creep is real - Cut features ruthlessly
  • Playtest early and often - Your friends will find bugs you missed

Tips 6:32 PM

U wanna game dev?

Don't let people tell you that using a game engine with a custom language (ie GameMaker, Godot, etc) isn't real coding. The code doesn't matter if the game is good. Pick something you know how to use or will take you as little time as possible to learn and get programming.

For music: Cadence Hira's YouTube channel is a great intro to music theory if you like VGM but are unfamiliar with music theory.
